Distillery Background & History
Glen Moray Distillery is located in Elgin, at the heart of Speyside, Scotland. Established in 1897, the distillery developed a reputation for producing approachable, fruit-driven Speyside single malts. Glen Moray has also been particularly adventurous with cask maturation, experimenting with wine-cask finishes long before they became widespread across the Scotch whisky industry. The distillery’s relatively gentle spirit character provides a versatile base for extended maturation and secondary maturation in wine casks.

Producer & Master Distiller
This limited-edition expression was released during the tenure of Master Distiller Graham Coull. Each bottle from the 1986 release was individually numbered and hand-signed by Coull. Only 3,482 bottles were released, making this significantly rarer than Glen Moray’s standard core-range expressions.

The Whisky
A mature Speyside single malt combining long-term bourbon-cask maturation with a finishing period in Port casks. The extended maturation develops considerable oak, vanilla and spice, while the Port influence contributes darker fruit, sweetness and additional richness. It was released as a limited-edition premium expression rather than part of the regular Glen Moray range.

Maturation & Cask Finish
The whisky spent the majority of its 25-year maturation in ex-bourbon casks, developing vanilla, oak, spice and mature malt characteristics. It was subsequently transferred into Port pipes/casks for finishing. The Port maturation adds deeper colour and layers of ripe and dried fruit, balancing the mature oak influence of the long bourbon-cask ageing.

Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep copper with amber and reddish highlights.

Nose: Rich and mature, opening with tropical and dark fruits, toffee and vanilla. Layers of dried berries, caramel and oak emerge alongside ginger, liquorice and subtle mint.

Palate: Full and rich, combining sweet Port-influenced fruit with vanilla, seasoned oak and warming spice. Dark berries, candied orange, caramelised fruit and creamy vanilla are supported by mature tannins and a distinctly spicy bourbon-cask character.

Finish: Long and warming, with dark chocolate, creamy vanilla, lingering oak spice and persistent wine-like fruit sweetness.

Food & Whisky Pairing
Excellent with dark chocolate, chocolate truffles, aged hard cheeses, roasted nuts, dried figs, dates, fruitcake and desserts incorporating berries or caramel. Its combination of mature oak and Port sweetness also works particularly well with an after-dinner cheese board. For a savoury pairing, consider aged Parmesan, mature Comté or strongly flavoured charcuterie.

Service Methods
Serve at approximately 18–22°C in a Glencairn, copita or other tulip-shaped whisky glass. Taste neat first to appreciate the mature oak and Port influence. A few drops of still water can open the fruit and soften the tannic oak character. Given its age and relatively moderate 43% ABV, avoid excessive dilution. Allowing the whisky around 10–15 minutes in the glass before drinking can reveal additional aromatic complexity.

Storage & Ageing Potential
Store upright in a cool, dark location away from sunlight and major temperature fluctuations. Unlike wine, whisky does not continue ageing once bottled. An unopened bottle can remain stable for decades when correctly stored. Due to its age, limited production and discontinued status, this expression also has considerably greater collectability than standard Glen Moray releases.
