Distillery Background & History
Glen Moray Distillery was established in 1897 in Elgin, the historic heart of Speyside. The site originally operated as the West Brewery before being converted into a whisky distillery. Glen Moray has since become particularly known for its approachable Speyside character and long history of experimenting with different cask finishes. The Elgin Classic range showcases this philosophy by taking the distillery’s light, fruity spirit and introducing additional flavours through carefully selected wine and fortified-wine casks.

The distillery creates a characteristically light and fruit-forward new-make spirit that works particularly well with secondary maturation. The Port Cask Finish demonstrates Glen Moray's cask-finishing style by combining traditional American oak maturation with finishing in Port casks.

Distillery & Terroir
The distillery is located on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, within Scotland's Speyside whisky region. Speyside is particularly associated with elegant, fruity and approachable single malts. Glen Moray's spirit typically displays citrus, orchard fruit, malt and vanilla characteristics, providing a relatively delicate base onto which the richer fruit character of Port casks can be layered.

The Whisky
A fruitier and richer interpretation of the standard Elgin Classic. Initial maturation develops the whisky's vanilla, malt and citrus characteristics before a secondary maturation in Port casks introduces additional red-fruit sweetness, spice and complexity. The result remains accessible and smooth but offers noticeably more berry-fruit character than the standard Elgin Classic.

The Port finish contributes additional layers of red berries, dried fruit, sweetness and gentle spice while retaining Glen Moray's underlying vanilla and malt character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Toasted vanilla and light oak accompanied by rich dried fruit and dark chocolate. Red berries and subtle spice emerge with time in the glass.

Palate: Smooth and approachable, with a distinctive combination of redcurrant, blackberry and warm spice. Creamy vanilla and caramel sweetness from the American oak sit underneath the richer Port-derived fruit.

Finish: Smooth and moderately long, with lingering honey, dark fruit, vanilla and gentle spice.

Food Pairing
Excellent with blue cheese, mature cheddar, charcuterie, dark chocolate, berry desserts, fruitcake and roasted nuts. The combination of sweet red fruit and gentle spice also works particularly well with richer cheeses.

Service Methods
Serve approximately 15–20 ml per guest for a tasting event. Present it neat in a Glencairn or tulip-shaped whisky glass, with still water available separately.

A few drops of water can soften the alcohol and reveal additional fruit and vanilla. It can also be served over a large cube of ice or used in a highball, although neat service is preferable when presenting it as part of a comparative tasting.

This progression moves from lighter and fresher styles toward richer and smokier expressions.

Storage & Ageing Potential
Store the bottle upright in a cool, dark environment away from sunlight and major temperature fluctuations. Whisky does not continue ageing once bottled. An unopened bottle can remain in excellent condition for decades when stored properly. Once opened, keep the closure tightly sealed and avoid excessive air exposure as the bottle level becomes lower.
