Distillery Background & History
Glen Moray Distillery is located in Elgin, at the heart of Speyside, Scotland. The distillery began producing whisky in 1897, although the site previously operated as a brewery. Over more than 120 years, Glen Moray has developed a reputation for approachable Speyside single malts and extensive experimentation with different cask types. The Elgin Classic is the distillery’s entry-point expression and is designed to showcase the light, smooth and fruit-forward character traditionally associated with both Glen Moray and Speyside.

Producer & Whisky Maker
Produced and distilled by Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin. The whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Glen Moray has become particularly recognised for cask experimentation, but the Elgin Classic deliberately keeps things straightforward, allowing the distillery’s underlying spirit character and American oak maturation to take centre stage.

Distillery & Terroir
The distillery sits on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, within Scotland's Speyside whisky region. Speyside is home to one of the world's greatest concentrations of malt whisky distilleries and is particularly associated with elegant, fruity and relatively approachable single malt styles. Glen Moray's house character fits comfortably within this tradition, emphasizing citrus, malt sweetness, vanilla and orchard-fruit characteristics.

The Whisky
The Elgin Classic is Glen Moray's signature introductory single malt. It is deliberately light, smooth and easy-drinking rather than heavily peated or dominated by oak. Citrus, caramel, malt and vanilla form the core of the whisky, making it particularly suitable for guests who may not normally drink Scotch. This accessibility also makes it a strong choice for a corporate whisky tasting station.

Maturation
The whisky is matured entirely in American oak casks. American oak contributes characteristic vanilla, caramel and gentle sweet-spice flavours while allowing Glen Moray's fresh citrus and malt character to remain prominent.

Unlike the Port, Sherry or Chardonnay expressions in the Elgin Classic collection, the standard Classic does not receive an additional speciality-cask finish.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh citrus fruit accompanied by butterscotch and warm freshly baked shortbread. The overall impression is light, sweet and inviting.

Palate: Malty toffee sweetness leads the palate, followed by blackcurrant and a fragrant lemongrass-like citrus character. American oak contributes gentle vanilla and sweetness without overwhelming the fruit.

Finish: Warm and comforting. Caramelised citrus gradually fades into subtle spice, leaving a clean and approachable finish.

Food Pairing
Pairs particularly well with mild cheeses, charcuterie, smoked salmon, roasted nuts, grilled chicken, vanilla desserts and milk chocolate. For your event, it can work nicely alongside the Cheese & Charcuterie Spread Station, although I would keep the whisky tasting separate from the free-flow wine service so guests can properly appreciate the spirit.

Service Methods
For a tasting station, serve approximately 15–20 ml per guest in a Glencairn or tulip-shaped whisky glass.

It can be enjoyed neat, with a few drops of still water, over ice, or as a refreshing whisky highball. For your event, I would initially present it neat and provide water separately. Because this is the lightest and most approachable Glen Moray in your selection, it should be the first whisky guests taste before moving on to Chardonnay Cask, Sherry Cask, Port Cask and finally Peated.

Storage & Ageing Potential
Once bottled, Scotch whisky does not continue ageing in the same way as wine. Store the bottle upright, away from sunlight and excessive heat, ideally in a cool environment with relatively stable temperature. An unopened bottle can remain in excellent condition for decades when stored properly. Once opened, minimizing the amount of air in the bottle becomes increasingly important as the fill level drops.
