Winery Background & History

Grand Bateau is a Bordeaux wine brand created in collaboration with the team behind Château Beychevelle, one of the well‑known estates in Saint‑Julien (Médoc). The Grand Bateau label is designed as a Bordeaux range that reflects the traditional style of the region while remaining approachable and consistent in quality across vintages. The iconic boat on the label references the mythical galleon associated with Château Beychevelle’s history and heritage.

Producer & Winemaker

Produced by the Grand Bateau brand under the technical supervision and expertise of the Château Beychevelle team (often linked with Maison Barrière and Beychevelle winemaking operations). Specific individual winemaker names aren’t broadly publicized for this label.

Vineyard

Grapes for Grand Bateau are sourced from various parcels across the Bordeaux appellation, typical of a négociant‑style Bordeaux blend. These sites benefit from classic Bordeaux terroir — gravelly soils with good drainage and climatic influence from the nearby Gironde estuary that aids ripening.

ABV %

Approximately 13.5% ABV.

Vinification and Aging Method

Vinification combines traditional and modern techniques: fermentation in temperature‑controlled stainless steel vats, with portions aged in oak barrels. The wine is generally aged in oak (approximately 6–8 months) to integrate spice and structural notes.

Grapes Varietals

75% Merlot

25% Cabernet Sauvignon

Typical Bordeaux red blend proportions for this wine.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Ruby red.

Nose: Ripe red fruits like plum and cassis with subtle spice and gentle oak influence.

Palate: Medium‑bodied with velvety ripe fruit, balanced acidity, and soft tannins leading to a savoury finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs well with classic French‑style dishes: roasted or grilled red meats, duck confit, lamb chops, hearty cassoulet, and aged cheeses. Also works with charcuterie or mushroom‑based dishes. (Serving temperature ~16–18°C).

Service Methods

Decant briefly (20–30 minutes) to open up aromas. Serve in a medium‑large red wine glass at 16–18°C (61–64°F).

Storage & Aging Potential

Best enjoyed within 3–6 years of vintage. With careful storage (cool, dark, ~12–14°C), it can develop slowly but it’s crafted more for approachable drinking than long cellar aging.
