Winery Background and History The winery was founded in 1996 by Kim Crawford and his wife Erica in their home in Auckland, New Zealand. Starting as a "virtual winery," they originally owned no land or physical winery space, instead sourcing grapes from local growers and leasing production facilities. This unconventional model allowed them to focus intensely on brand building and quality sourcing. The brand achieved rapid international success, specifically in the United States, and was sold to Vincor in 2003, later becoming part of the Constellation Brands portfolio. Today, it stands as the top-selling New Zealand wine brand in the U.S. market.

Producer and Wine Maker The wine is produced by Kim Crawford Wines under the umbrella of Constellation Brands. While the brand was established by Kim Crawford, the winemaking direction has been led by Anthony Walkenhorst since 2005. Walkenhorst, who worked closely with the founder during his initial years, focuses on a fruit-driven philosophy that emphasizes varietal purity and the distinctive regional characteristics of Marlborough.

Vineyards and Micro Climate The fruit is primarily sourced from vineyards located in Marlborough’s two premier sub-regions: the Wairau Valley and the Awatere Valley. The Wairau Valley provides tropical fruit notes and weight, while the cooler, windier Awatere Valley contributes mineral acidity and herbaceous pungency. The region is characterized by high sunshine hours and cool nights, a diurnal temperature swing that preserves the natural acidity of the grapes while allowing for full flavor development. The soils are predominantly well-draining stony alluvium.

Vinification & Aging Methods Grapes are harvested at peak ripeness during the cool night hours to maintain freshness and minimize oxidation. Each vineyard block is fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using selected yeast strains designed to enhance the aromatic profile of Sauvignon Blanc. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation or oak aging, remaining in stainless steel to preserve its crisp, vibrant nature until bottling.

Tasting notes The wine displays a very pale yellow color with green reflections. The nose is highly aromatic, featuring intense notes of passion fruit, grapefruit, and lime zest, underscored by crushed herbs and a hint of lemongrass. On the palate, it is fresh and juicy with a medium body and vibrant acidity. Flavors of melon, pineapple, and green apple lead into a clean, zesty finish with a subtle mineral streak.

Food & Wine Pairing This wine pairs excellently with fresh seafood, particularly oysters on the half shell, steamed mussels, and lobster. It is also a classic match for summer salads, asparagus risotto, and dishes featuring goat cheese or feta. Its bright acidity makes it a great companion for lightly spiced Asian cuisine.

Service Methods and Temperatures Serve well-chilled to maintain the wine's crispness and aromatic intensity. The ideal service temperature is between 7°C and 10°C. A standard white wine glass is recommended to concentrate the lifted tropical aromas.

Storage and Aging Potential Designed for immediate enjoyment and to showcase youthful fruit vibrancy, this wine is best consumed within 1 to 2 years of the vintage. Store in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature to prevent premature oxidation.
