The Glenrothes Distillery was founded in 1879 in Rothes, Speyside, Scotland, a region renowned for elegant, fruit-driven single malts. For many decades, Glenrothes supplied spirit for blends but over time developed its own range of aged single malts celebrated for rich sherry-influenced maturation and purity of expression. Today’s core range — including the 18-year old — falls under the Soleo Collection, a line that emphasizes age statements and maturation in sherry-seasoned oak casks, honoring the traditional linkage between Scotch whisky and Spanish sherry influence.

The Glenrothes’ whisky is crafted by its distillery team using tall copper pot stills and pure local spring water, producing a sweet, fruit-forward, and elegantly balanced spirit. While not typically spotlighted by a single “whisky maker” name, the Glenrothes blending and maturation team carefully selects and combines aged stocks to maintain consistency and depth across vintages in the Soleo Collection. 

Vineyard:

As whisky, there are no vineyards — flavour and character derive instead from Speyside terroir, local water sources (like the Burn of Rothes), and the maturation environment in oak casks. 

The Spirit:

This is a single malt Scotch whisky aged 18 years and bottled as part of The Glenrothes’ Soleo Collection. Its profile is shaped heavily by maturation in sherry-seasoned oak casks, especially a high proportion of first-fill sherry casks, giving it its signature richness and complexity. It is bottled at natural colour with no artificial caramel added. 

Vintage:

Non-vintage — while each bottling carries an 18-year age statement, it is a blend of multiple years’ distillates matured at least 18 years.

43 % alcohol by volume (86 proof). 

Vinification and Aging Method:

Distilled in traditional pot stills from 100 % malted barley, the spirit is aged for 18 years predominantly in sherry-seasoned oak casks (often from Spain). This extended maturation imparts sweet fruit, spice, and subtle oak-derived character, making the whisky both full-bodied and refined.

N/A — whisky does not use grape varietals; instead, it is made from malted barley and water.

• Finish: Long, smooth, with lingering sweet spice and subtle peppery warmth.

Best enjoyed neat in a tulip or Glencairn glass at room temperature to concentrate aromatics. A few drops of water can help unlock additional flavour layers, while a large ice cube is optional for a cooler, softer experience. 

Storage and Aging Potential:

Store upright in a cool, dark place, away from direct light and heat. Once opened, whisky will not age further but remains stable for many months if properly sealed. Unlike wine, it does not continue to evolve significantly in the bottle.
