The Macallan 18 Years Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Double Cask
The Macallan 18 Years Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Double Cask
Distillery Background and History
The Macallan Distillery, founded in 1824 in Craigellachie, Scotland, is one of the most prestigious and historically significant single malt Scotch whisky producers in the world. Over nearly two centuries, The Macallan has established a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, refined wood and spirit integration, and an enduring focus on exceptional oak cask maturation. Its legacy includes a long lineage of highly respected aged whiskies that reflect both tradition and innovation in Scotch whisky production.
Producer and Master Distiller
Produced by The Macallan under The Edrington Group, this whisky is overseen by the distillery’s Master Whisky Maker and its whisky making team, responsible for cask selection, blending and quality control — shaping each expression with precision. The Master Whisky Maker highlighted for the Double Cask series is Kirsteen Campbell.
Raw Materials and Terroir
Made from 100% malted barley, pure Speyside water and traditional yeast, this single malt reflects high‑quality raw materials typical of Scottish whisky production. Though whisky does not derive flavour directly from vineyard “terroir,” the barley source, water purity and regional microclimate influence maturation and final character.
Distillation Method and Still Type
Distilled in copper pot stills — traditional for Scotch single malts — The Macallan’s stills are designed to create a rich, concentrated new make spirit that later integrates deeply with oak casks during extended maturation.
Maturation and Cask Management
Matured for a minimum of 18 years in a balanced combination of sherry‑seasoned American oak and sherry‑seasoned European oak casks. The American oak imparts vanilla, honey and citrus sweetness, while European oak provides spice, dried fruit and structural depth. The Double Cask method marries these influences to produce a harmonious, rich and layered whisky.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Amber honey with natural oak influence.
Nose: Dried fruits, toffee, ginger, orange peel, nutmeg and warm baking spice.
Palate: Full‑bodied with rich raisin and sultana, caramel, vanilla, subtle citrus zest, gentle oak spice and creamy texture.
Finish: Long, warm and elegant with lingering oak spice, dried fruit sweetness, ginger and orange.
Food Pairing and Consumption Style
Pairs beautifully with rich desserts like dark chocolate tart, sticky toffee pudding, pecan pie, and crème brûlée. Also excellent with aged cheeses (mature Gouda, Stilton, blue cheese), dried fruit compotes, roasted nuts or a fine cigar. Enjoy as a contemplative after‑dinner dram.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve neat in a tulip or Glencairn glass at room temperature (18‑20 °C) to concentrate aromatics. A small splash of spring water may open additional complexity without diluting richness. Ice is optional but will mellow the flavours.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store upright in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and temperature swings. Whisky does not continue aging once bottled, but quality remains stable for many years if stored properly.
Grain Composition and Percentage Used
100% malted barley used in the mash bill. Typical for single malt Scotch whisky.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
43% ABV (86 proof).
