Distillery Background and History

Glen Ord Distillery was established in 1838 on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands (Speyside), making it one of the older malt distilleries in Scotland. Part of the Singleton range owned by Diageo, the distillery produces single malts that emphasise smoothness, rich fruit character and oak integration — qualities showcased in its aged expressions. The Singleton brand packages this regional style for global audiences, particularly in Asia and Europe.

Producer and Master Distiller

Produced by Diageo under The Singleton label, this 18-year expression reflects the work of Glen Ord’s whisky making team, with expertise in cask selection and extended maturation. While individual master distillers aren’t always credited on this release, the spirit reflects Diageo’s broader craftsmanship and quality control across aged single malts.

Raw Materials and Terroir

Made from 100% malted Scottish barley and pure Highland/Speyside water, this whisky leverages high-quality raw materials typical of the region. Whisky doesn’t express terroir like wine, but ingredient quality and local water profile shape mouthfeel and aromatic balance.

Distillation Method and Still Type

Distilled in traditional copper pot stills, the classic method for single malt Scotch. These stills and the distillery’s cut points ensure a rich, fruity spirit that develops complexity during long oak maturation.

Maturation and Cask Management

Matured for 18 years in a blend of American oak (ex-bourbon) and European oak casks, chosen to balance sweet fruit, spice and oak influence. This long cask interaction builds depth, smoothness and integrated character.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Warm golden amber with oak depth.

Nose: Complex and balanced with dried fruits (apricots, figs, blackcurrants), polished antique oak, walnuts, ginger biscuits and a honeyed sweetness that opens with time.

Palate: Silky and rich with elegant orange oil, rich fruit layers, chocolate truffle notes, soft cedar and mild spice. Smooth, cooling texture that broadens into dried fruit and subtle oak.

Finish: Long and finely detailed, with lingering honeyed sweetness, cedary oak and gentle spice.

Food Pairing and Consumption Style

Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, citrus-based tarts, gingerbread, spiced nuts and aged cheeses. Mature roasted meats or rich poultry dishes also stand up well. Serve as a contemplative after-dinner dram or with quality dark chocolate for dessert.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped or Glencairn whisky glass at room temperature (18–20 °C). A small amount of spring water can help open deeper fruit and spice layers without diluting balance.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store upright in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and heat. Once bottled, whisky does not continue to age — but if stored well, it will maintain its quality and complexity for many years.

Grain Composition and Percentage Used

100% malted barley — standard requirement for single malt Scotch whisky.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

40% ABV — classic single malt strength emphasising smoothness and drinkability.
